Drstelja 13, Destrnik, Slovenia 2253, Slovenia
Matija Murko was born in Drstelja in the parish of St. Urban. He attended elementary school at home and in Ptuj. He was grateful all his life that his father enrolled him in the fourth grade of the German school in Ptuj at the age of ten, so that he could learn German earlier and better. He attended junior high school in Ptuj, and high school in Maribor. He was an excellent student, excelling especially in the Slovene language. From the third grade onwards, he supported himself completely on his own with a small scholarship and numerous lessons. Murkova Street in Ljubljana and Murkova Street in Ptuj are now named after him. You can visit the Ethnological Museum of Matija Murko in Drstelja, where the owner Janez Žumer will certainly treat you to a home-made wine and some cold cuts.
