Begunje na Gorenjskem, Radovljica, Slovenia 4240, Slovenia

Overview

Kacenštajn Castle, also known as Katzenštajn Castle or Begunj Castle, together with the Church of St. Urh, forms the central part of the old town of Begunj in Gorenjska. The castle was first mentioned in historical documents in 1428. Nobles from the Kacijanar family rebuilt the manor in the 16th century, and the manor acquired its final appearance a century later, when the Lambergs moved from Kamen Castle in the 17th century.
The building is classified as an immovable monument of national importance and was declared so on 6 October 1999. A cultural national monument is a building that has exceptional cultural value at the national level. Such buildings are initially assessed as cultural heritage and then entered into the Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage. The declaration is made by acts of proclamation adopted by the competent authority. These acts are published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia or the local community gazette.
The park consists of a walled Renaissance parterre (17th century), which has a portal in the axis of the castle tower, a chestnut avenue with pavilions, an orchard partially converted into a hostage cemetery, and a park area south of the castle.
