Overview

Betnava Castle (German: Schloss Windenau) is located near Maribor in Styria. In the 16th century, the castle grew into a Renaissance structure with a moat. The Counts of Herberstein turned it into a Protestant station with a chapel and cemetery. In the 18th century, the castle was remodeled in the Baroque style after a fire in 1685.
The building is classified as an immovable monument of national importance and was declared so on 6 October 1999. A cultural national monument is a building that has exceptional cultural value at the national level. Such buildings are initially assessed as cultural heritage and then entered into the Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage. The declaration is carried out by acts of proclamation adopted by the competent authority. These acts are published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia or the local community gazette.
In addition to the castle building, its complex also includes the Betnava Park. The castle park was declared an immovable monument of national importance on 6 October 1999 and is also entered in the Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage.
Over time, the central building with a staircase and representative rooms was rebuilt in the castle. A chapel was added to the north side, while the other three wings remained unchanged. The ceremonial hall was painted in 1784 with Baroque architecture.
The castle changed many noble owners. The owners were the nobles Herbersteini, Khiessl, Auersperg, Ursini-Rosenberg, Szekely, Brandis and Dürr. The castle also became the summer residence of the bishops of Maribor-Lavantine around 1863.
