Overview
Bizeljsko Castle (German: Wisell) is located above the village of Bizeljsko in the municipality of Brežice. In 1278, the knight Eberhard von Visel was mentioned, and the castle was not mentioned until 1404 as castrum Vysell. After the Bizeljsko knights, the castle was managed by the knights from Kozje (Janž from Kozje in 1404), the lords of Dobrnski (Žiga and Andrej Dobrnski (1421)) and Soteški (Henrik and Jošt Soteški (1458)). In 1532, Bizeljsko was given as a fief by the counts of Tattenbach, who acquired (purchased) the property into hereditary ownership around 1608. In 1749, the owner was Countess Valburga Baumgarten (née Tattenbach). In 1764, the owners of the castle were Counts Wildenstein and Count Kajetan Wildenstein, and in 1803 Countess Maria Anna Dietrichstein. In 1820, the owner was Franc Hirschhofer, and then in 1858, the Bizelje lordship was bought by Prince Weriand Windisch-Graetz and merged with Kunšperk Castle. Between the two wars, Count Giovanni (Johann) Ceschi di Santa Croce (son-in-law of Prince Hugo Weriand Windisch-Graetz) lived in the castle, and later his son-in-law Baron Maasburg with his family. It preserves the castle chapel of St. Jerome from 1623, and halls with destroyed frescoes in the Trompe l'oeil technique, with three-dimensional illusionistic stucco extending into space. Since 1971, the Klakočar family has lived in the castle. In recent years, the castle has been taking on an increasingly tidy appearance.
