Overview

Grad Castle is located in the settlement of Grad and stands on a steep hill in the northwestern part of Goričko. The territory around the present-day castle was incorporated into the Hungarian state by King Bela III. and in 1183 donated it to the Cistercian monastery in Monošter for management. Grad Castle is an immovable monument of national importance and was declared so on 6 October 1999. A cultural national monument is a building that has exceptional cultural value at the national level. Such buildings are initially evaluated as cultural heritage and then entered into the Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage. The declaration is carried out by acts of proclamation adopted by the competent authority. These acts are published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia or the local community bulletin. The castle features workshops of local crafts (wheelbarrow making, blacksmithing, pottery, weaving, herbalism, brandy making), which tell the story of the traditional use of natural resources and their processing with the manual skills of masters. Above the basement, on the ground floor, there is a vaulted round-oval space without windows. It houses the visitor center and the castle shop with products from Goričko craftsmen and farms. Literature, guides to the Goričko Nature Park, and promotional and informational materials from providers from the Goričko region, other Slovenian nature parks, and Pomurje are available.
The castle building, park, and courtyard The castle is the largest Baroque castle in Slovenia, as it is said to have 365 rooms, according to legend. There are also several other legends associated with the castle, the most famous of which is the legend of the dragon Kač with the golden crown. The castle building is surrounded by an eight-hectare park designed in the landscape or so-called English style. Large tulip trees, plane trees, sycamores, red beeches, hornbeams, and oaks fill the castle with magnificence and centuries-old longevity. In the castle courtyard, energies from the depths of the Earth boil, which most people feel as warmth or tingling.
