Overview

Hompoš Castle is located in the village of Pivola near Maribor. The castle is a huge complex, which is quite sprawling and partly underground. It has two floors. The core of the castle design is the southern wing, which is built of stone, while the eastern and western wings are built of brick. The outer part of the southern wing has stone window frames, and on the courtyard side there are colonnaded arcades. Around 1945, the castle underwent its last extensive reconstruction. As a result, its true original historical design was greatly blurred. A part of the old castle park is still preserved around the castle. Today, the castle has been completely modernized and adapted for pedagogical activities. Hompoš Castle is an immovable monument of local importance and was declared an immovable monument on April 8, 1992. A cultural local monument is a building that has exceptional cultural value at the local level. Such buildings are initially evaluated as cultural heritage and then entered into the Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage. The declaration is carried out by means of declaration acts adopted by the competent authority. These acts are published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia or the local community gazette.
In addition to the castle, the castle complex also includes the castle park, which extends around the castle. The castle park has been declared an immovable monument of local importance and is also entered in the Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage.
