Overview
The undefended Kebelj manor (or tower) is said to have been owned by Otto of Maribor from Kebelj as early as 1343. The remains of Kebelj Castle or Zajčev Castle can still be seen above the manor. In 1440, Ottokar of Kebelj is said to have declared to the provincial government that he inherited from his father the provincial fiefdoms, such as the tower and manor in Kebelj by the stream above Bistrica, the manor in Tinje, Vrhovlje, Slakova, Brezje and Freudenberg, and the vineyard in Strmec in Slakova. In the same year, Emperor Frederick III. granted him the aforementioned fiefdoms again. In addition to the aforementioned fiefdoms, Ottokar also received five farms in the vicinity of Zajčev Castle. In 1502, Henrik, Count of Hardeški, sold the abandoned manor to Ivan Turjaški. The manor is also known as "Zbeg's Castle", after the local man Zbeg and according to the legend that the two Kebelj castles were once connected by an underground tunnel.
