Overview
Kolovrat Castle stands on a hill below which lies the village of the same name, Kolovrat. The castle is said to have been named after the spinning wheel, which it is said to resemble. It is located near Izlak. It once lay along an important road that connected the ports along the Sava River. The first owners were the Kolovrat lords. In 1256, Gebehardo de Cholobart is mentioned, which is said to be the first indirect mention of the castle in sources. The owners of Kolovrat were initially Andes, and later in 1270, the Spanheim ministeriales. The Kolovrat lords soon died out and were followed by various owners. It was not until the second half of the 14th century that Kolovrat was directly mentioned as a castle in documents. Around 1400 it was mentioned as Kolabreth, dir vesten, and in 1444 as Kolobarth, vest and together with the village of the same name, Kolobrat, haws, dorff, vest.
