The commandant's house stands in the northeastern part of the historic city center of Črnomelj and forms the eastern side of the main city square. Today, the building is one-story, divided by wings. The outer facade has rectangular windows, and on the inside of the former courtyard there are glazed arcaded corridors on the ground floor and first floor.
This design dates back to 1655, when construction of a new commandant's house began after a severe fire that burned down the city. This is also evidenced by a stone slab with the Križnička coat of arms. It is likely that after 1824 an extension was added to the main building, which housed a school, and later a tax office and a courthouse. At the end of the 19th century, the building was extended to the south, adding four new ones to the nine on the eastern facade. The commandant's house was last renovated in 1911.
