The first mentions of the castle date back to documents from 1145, and later testimonies describe it as the property of the Counts of Celje, who enjoyed it during occasional hunting events and knightly games.
After the Turkish arson in 1487, the castle was converted into an anti-Turkish camp, which is where its name comes from. With the end of the Turkish decline, it lay desolate and decayed for centuries as an abandoned fortress. The ruins were first cleaned in the 1950s, by the locals themselves as part of the Tourist Association. They also provided electrification. A private individual also tried to restore it, but since restoring a castle is a demanding task, it remained desolate for many years.
Between 1984 and 1988, Pivovarna Laško prevented its desolation with a comprehensive renovation and breathed new life into it with the help of an exceptional professional team led by architect Andrej Kemro. Andrej Kemr, Tomaž Kržišnik and Miljenko Licul received the Plečnik Award for the year 1988 for the renovation of the castle.
The restaurant Grad Tabor Laško opened its doors for the first time in 1989.
Pivovarna Laško formed its own catering team, which was extremely successful and also received an award for its work - recognizing excellence - the Order of St. Fortunatus, one of the most important world awards in the catering industry. They also took care of the education of young caterers and many successful ones in this field fondly remember their beginnings at the Tabor Laško Castle.
Pivovarna Laško abandoned the idea of ​​having its own catering team in 1997. The castle has therefore been home to tenants for years. Since April 2011, Pivovarna Laško has been collaborating with chef Marko Pavčnik, and Pavus has been spreading its colorful pens at Tabor Castle - a restaurant that follows the latest culinary trends with local and seasonal delicacies, and hides a lot of positive energy that, with its fresh smells and pleasant flavors, captivates every visitor.
